What it is
Tuta Mail is an encrypted email and calendar service from Tutao GmbH in Hanover, Germany. It uses a zero-knowledge architecture with quantum-resistant encryption and, unlike most rivals, encrypts subject lines along with message bodies, attachments, calendars and contacts. All data sits on Tuta’s own servers in ISO 27001 certified data centres in Germany under GDPR.
The web, desktop, Android and iOS clients are open source on GitHub. Tuta does not use PGP but its own implementation, initially based on AES 256 and RSA 2048, and it says forward secrecy is planned for the future. Because decrypted data never leaves the client, Tuta does not offer IMAP at all.
