What it is
Proton Mail is an encrypted email service run by Proton AG in Geneva, a Swiss company whose primary shareholder is the non-profit Proton Foundation. Proton says it has no venture capital investors and that the service is funded entirely by paying subscribers. Every plan, including the free one, uses zero-access encryption, so Proton states it cannot read your stored mail.
Beyond email you get calendars, Drive storage and an online document editor on all plans. Proton Unlimited bundles the wider suite: Proton VPN on 10 devices, the Pass password manager, 500 GB of Drive, Proton Sentinel, Dark Web Monitoring and Emergency Access. Business tiers add custom domains, SMTP access for external tools, and on Workspace Premium the Lumo private AI chat and Scribe writing assistant.
What it costs in practice
The free plan costs nothing but is deliberately limited: up to 1 GB, one address, 150 messages a day, three folders, three labels and one filter. There is no IMAP/SMTP support, so you are confined to the web app, and the desktop app is only a 14-day trial. Attachments are capped at 25 MB on every consumer tier, paid ones included.
