What is NordVPN?

NordVPN is the virtual private network from Nord Security. It encrypts your internet traffic and routes it through one of 8,900+ servers covering 224+ locations across 149 countries, hiding your IP address and virtual location from your ISP, advertisers, and anyone lurking on public Wi-Fi. In its current form it is pitched as an all-in-one digital security app: the tunnel remains the core, but a next-generation antivirus and dark web monitoring now ship inside the same client.

Apps cover Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, Android TV, and Apple TV, with lightweight proxy extensions for Chrome, Firefox, and Edge. One account secures up to 10 devices at once, and you can install NordVPN on a Wi-Fi router to protect everything behind it.

Speed, protocols, and the server network

Speed is NordVPN's loudest claim, and it is at least an attributed one: the site cites October 2025 testing by West Coast Labs for its fastest-VPN title, and the features page lists 800+ Mbps throughput it says was confirmed by independent tests. The engine is NordLynx, the company's own lightweight protocol tuned for performance, with OpenVPN available for industry-standard reliability and NordWhisper for restrictive networks that block VPN traffic outright. Every app also supports post-quantum encryption.

Specialty servers cover the edge cases: Double VPN encrypts your connection twice, Onion Over VPN combines Tor with the tunnel, obfuscated servers hide that you are using a VPN at all, and a Dedicated IP gives you an address only you control. Kill Switch, split tunneling, Private DNS, and SmartPlay for streaming round out the client.

Security beyond the tunnel

The next-gen antivirus is designed to be proactive rather than reactive. It blocks scam and phishing sites in real time, scans downloads for malware, and strips intrusive ads and trackers, and the higher tiers add unlimited email protection. NordVPN says the scanning runs on proprietary machine learning models and that data from your files and browsing is never sent to third parties.

Dark Web Monitor watches around the clock for leaked email addresses on every plan. Dark Web Monitor Pro, reserved for the higher tiers, extends that to phone numbers, credit card details, and national ID or Social Security numbers, alerting you before stolen data can be used against you.

Meshnet and power-user extras

NordVPN features page listing next-gen antivirus, Dedicated IP, Meshnet, and Dark Web Monitor Pro

Meshnet deserves a special mention because you can download NordVPN and use it for free: it links your devices into a private encrypted network for secure file sharing, LAN gaming, traffic routing, and remote access to your other devices. Add multi-factor authentication on the account, a DNS leak test, and 24/7 live chat support, and the package holds up for tinkerers as well as casual users.

How the plans divide up

NordVPN pricing page showing Basic, Complete, and Complete Max plan tiers

Basic covers the essentials: the VPN itself with scam and phishing filtering, plus standard Dark Web Monitor. Complete, flagged on the pricing page as the most popular tier, adds the full antivirus suite, Dark Web Monitor Pro, a cross-platform password manager with a data breach scanner, and 1 TB of encrypted cloud storage. Complete Max layers a Dedicated IP on top. Every tier includes ten simultaneous connections and a 30-day money-back guarantee, and plans come in 1-month, 1-year, and 2-year terms, with the advertised savings comparing intro prices against renewal rates.

Who should choose NordVPN

NordVPN fits travelers streaming their legal home content from abroad, remote workers living on hotel and café Wi-Fi, and households that want one subscription covering phones, laptops, TVs, and the router. Complete is a quiet bargain for anyone who would otherwise pay separately for a password manager and encrypted storage. It is not ideal for people who want a permanently free VPN — Meshnet aside, the service requires a paid plan, and the headline rates assume a long-term commitment — and businesses managing team access should look instead at NordLayer, Nord Security's dedicated business product.

Frequently asked questions

How much does NordVPN cost?

NordVPN ranges from about $3.49/mo on a 2-year Basic plan up to $25.29/mo for month-to-month Complete Max. The 2-year plans are by far the cheapest; monthly billing is the most expensive.

How many devices does NordVPN cover?

Every NordVPN plan covers up to 10 devices simultaneously, and there is a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Verdict

NordVPN is a strong all-round pick — fast, with Threat Protection built in, 10-device coverage, and optional bundles (password manager, cloud storage, identity protection) as you move up tiers. The value is excellent on a 2-year plan; just go in knowing monthly pricing is steep and renewal prices rise, so commit to a longer term for the headline rate.
