What is LinkedIn?

LinkedIn is a professional network whose signed-out homepage points visitors to top content, jobs and internships, people to connect with, and skills to learn. Signed-out visitors get a page headlined Welcome to your professional community, with navigation split across Top Content, People, Learning, Jobs and Games.

Underneath sits a stack of separately sold business products, each with its own marketing site and sales motion — Sales Navigator for sellers, Recruiter and Recruiter Lite for hiring, LinkedIn Learning for skills, Campaign Manager for advertisers. The core network stays free — the vendor calls it LinkedIn basic — while each paid product is sold separately.

What the free account covers

LinkedIn's free tier — what the vendor calls LinkedIn basic — is described as helping users engage with their network, and the signed-out homepage is organized around the jobs members come for. The homepage maps to those jobs directly, with sections for finding the right job or internship, connecting with people who can help, and learning the skills you need to succeed. There is also a Games section and a software directory surfaced as Discover the best software tools.

Hiring and job posting on LinkedIn

LinkedIn Talent Solutions marketing page for posting a job

For employers, LinkedIn splits by hiring frequency. LinkedIn splits job posting two ways: occasional, low-volume hirers without recruiter support post a job with LinkedIn Hiring Pro, which generates the post and shortlists top applicants, while companies hiring consistently year-round are routed to sales for LinkedIn Job Slots, which adds ATS and CRM integrations and hiring-team collaboration. The vendor reports that 83 percent of posted jobs draw a qualified candidate within 24 hours. Recruiter Lite is positioned for individuals hiring just a few people a year, adding proactive sourcing: 20-plus smart filters, saved search alerts, daily candidate recommendations, saved templates, 30 InMail credits per month, and search and messaging across first, second and third-degree networks.

Sales Navigator for B2B sellers

LinkedIn Sales Navigator plan comparison page showing Core, Advanced and Advanced Plus

Sales Navigator is LinkedIn's B2B selling product, pitched as save time, find leads, win deals. The Core plan, aimed at individual sellers, covers 50-plus advanced search filters, 50 InMail messages a month, Relationship Explorer, Relationship Map and alerts. Advanced adds Account IQ and Lead IQ, team seat management and centralized billing, Message Assist in public beta, TeamLink, Smart Links, team reporting, Buyer Intent and CSV upload of your book of business; Advanced Plus layers on advanced CRM integrations across Salesforce, HubSpot, Microsoft Dynamics and Oracle, lead and contact creation, CRM import, CRM embedded experiences and profiles, and custom ROI reporting. The vendor reports a 45 percent average increase in deal size among users.

Advertising and Campaign Manager

Marketers work through a separate track. Campaign Manager targets by job title, industry, skills and more across Sponsored Content, Sponsored Messaging, Dynamic Ads and Text Ads. Minimum daily budgets start at $10, ad cost is set by auction bids, and you control the daily or lifetime budget and can start, stop or change ads at any time.

Learning and what Premium adds

LinkedIn Learning is positioned as personalized career guidance rather than a course library alone, though the vendor counts more than 24,000 expert-led courses, with AI Skill Pathways and skills intelligence mapping what a workforce knows against what roles demand.

Premium is sold in four flavors — Premium Career, Premium Business, Premium All-in-One and Premium Company Page — adding applicant and company insights, who viewed your profile, an AI writing assistant for profiles and resumes, and a custom button. Eligible members get a free trial, though not twice within 12 months.

Who should choose LinkedIn

A free LinkedIn basic profile is the sensible baseline for most professionals, since every paid tier LinkedIn sells is built on top of it. Past that baseline, be selective. Recruiter Lite fits individuals hiring just a few people a year, Sales Navigator fits B2B sellers who need account and lead research plus InMail reach beyond their own connections, and Premium Career fits an active job search — cancel it once you land. LinkedIn's paid tiers are aimed at job seekers, small businesses, recruiters and B2B sellers, so freelancers and local service businesses whose customers are not on the platform will get less out of them.

Frequently asked questions

Is LinkedIn Premium worth it for job seekers?

For most, the free tier is enough. Premium Career ($39.99/mo) mainly helps if you value applicant-ranking insights, direct InMail to recruiters, and LinkedIn Learning; try the free month first.

Does LinkedIn have a free version?

Yes. A free Basic account covers profiles, job search, applications, connection requests and the feed indefinitely. Paid tiers add InMail, analytics and Learning.

Verdict

LinkedIn is the category default for professional networking and job discovery, and its free tier is strong enough that most job seekers never need to pay. Premium Career adds useful but non-essential extras (recruiter InMail, applicant insights, LinkedIn Learning) at a price that's hard to justify for casual users, and the Sales Navigator and Recruiter tiers get expensive fast. It earns a high score on reach and utility, tempered by thin marginal value on its paid job-seeker plan.
