Glassdoor

4.0
out of 5 · our rating

Pros

  • Free and unmatched depth of crowdsourced employee reviews, salaries, and interview insights
  • Salary tools (Know Your Worth) benchmark real reported pay by role, company, and location
  • Company culture, management, and work-life ratings help vet employers before applying
  • Strong interview prep with thousands of user-reported questions and experiences

Cons

  • No longer a native job board — postings are routed through Indeed's sponsored network, diluting its standalone value
  • Review authenticity is a persistent concern: self-selection bias and suspected employer-solicited or astroturfed reviews
  • Employer pricing is opaque, sales-gated, and can run well into five figures annually with no public rates
  • 2024–2025 real-name/privacy controversy and the ongoing Indeed integration have dented trust in its anonymity promise

Best for: Researching a company's culture and pay before applying or interviewing, Benchmarking salaries by role, company, and location, Prepping for interviews using real reported questions.

What is Glassdoor?

Glassdoor is a career research and job search platform built almost entirely on crowdsourced employee reporting. The site says it carries anonymous reviews on over 600,000 companies worldwide, written by the people who actually work there, and pairs those reviews with interview experience reports, free personalized salary estimates and open roles. Since becoming part of Indeed, Glassdoor pulls job listings from Indeed while keeping its own company knowledge layer; the About page describes the result as tailored, high-quality job matches instead of endless scrolling and mass applying.

The consumer side costs nothing. Glassdoor states on its About page that job seekers never pay, and that job matching, company reviews, salary information and the anonymous community are free. Revenue comes from the employer side, sold under the Glassdoor for Employers banner as employer branding rather than a traditional job board package.

Reviews, salaries and interview prep

The research loop is the reason most people land here. A company profile pairs star ratings with written employee reviews, and the homepage surfaces an Interview Experience section spanning companies including Anthropic, OpenAI, Stripe and NVIDIA. The Salaries section runs a salary estimation tool that produces a personalized estimate and lets you compare it against submissions from other workers, from a NASA astrophysicist to a Tractor Supply store manager. Glassdoor also publishes an annual Best Places to Work list, currently promoting the 2026 edition.

Anonymous conversation in the Community

The Community tab is Glassdoor's answer to the professional forum, organized into groups it calls Bowls. The Worklife Bowl is by far the biggest at 12M members, alongside a Tech bowl and narrower ones such as Salary Negotiations at 776K and Women in Tech at 200K. Posts carry a job title or an employer rather than a name, so threads stay candid: an analyst asking what a promotion raise should look like, a consultant worried that remote client work is stalling their career, a project manager asking about returning after a break. It answers questions that static reviews cannot.

What Glassdoor for Employers sells

The free employer profile lets a company claim its presence, add a mission statement and logo, respond to reviews, request more of them, and filter its own ratings by job title, location and employment status. The Enhanced Profile adds featured reviews, premium branded content, removal of competitor ads from your profile, the ability to target jobs on competitor profiles, plus follower demographics, keyword analysis and industry benchmarking.

Larger organizations get Spotlight Pages, customized pages for individual divisions, teams and employee resource groups that surface relevant jobs across both Glassdoor and Indeed, and Employer Branding Ads, which run across Glassdoor, Indeed and other sites in a single buy. The Employer Branding Hub bundles the Glassdoor Enhanced Profile with Indeed Company Pages Premium.

Review Intelligence and brand analytics

Review Intelligence is the piece employer brand teams tend to care about. Glassdoor says a natural language processing engine reads your review corpus and turns sentiment into high-level insights, with topic breakdowns for Management, Culture, Diversity and Inclusion, and Leadership, filterable by job function and country. Polished executive summaries download for sharing with leadership. The wider Insights dashboards cover brand impressions, profile traffic trends, visitor demographics, company update engagement, and benchmarking of your ratings and brand impressions against the competition. Glassdoor's employer branding page states that 56% of Glassdoor users agree they are more likely to apply to an open job if the employer is active on Glassdoor.

Who should choose Glassdoor

For job seekers the calculus is easy: it is free, it is broad, and reading a dozen reviews plus an interview report before a final round is time well spent. For employers, Glassdoor makes most sense when candidates already talk about you, and when a named person owns employer brand as a job rather than as a side task.

It is a weaker fit for very small or newly formed companies, where thin review volume leaves the profile sparse and gives the analytics almost nothing to work with. It is also not a recruiting system: the job listings come from Indeed and employers connect with candidates through Indeed, so treat Glassdoor as the reputation layer, not the hiring workflow.

How Glassdoor compares

AlternativeHow it differs
IndeedGlassdoor's sister company under Recruit Holdings and now the actual engine behind its job listings; far larger job board but thinner on employer-review depth.
LinkedInDominant for professional networking and job applications; stronger recruiter tools but limited candid, anonymous employee reviews.
ComparablyMore focused company-culture and compensation review platform with structured ratings, though a much smaller review corpus than Glassdoor.

Frequently asked questions

Is Glassdoor free for job seekers?

Yes. Browsing reviews, salaries, and jobs is free, and a free account (or contributing a review) unlocks additional content. All core job-seeker features are free.

Can employers still post jobs directly on Glassdoor?

Not as a standalone product. Since the Indeed integration, jobs are advertised through Indeed's sponsored network and distributed to Glassdoor; branding and profile products are sold via quote.

Verdict

For job seekers, Glassdoor remains one of the most useful free research tools available — its employee reviews, salary data, and interview insights are genuinely hard to replicate elsewhere. Its weaknesses are structural: review authenticity is never fully verifiable, and its identity as a job board has eroded now that postings flow through Indeed. Treat it as a company-intelligence resource rather than a primary place to apply, and cross-check its ratings against other sources.
