What is HackerRank?
HackerRank is a developer skills platform serving two audiences from one assessment engine. For employers it is a technical screening and interviewing suite; for developers it is a practice and certification hub. The site brands itself as the Developer Skills Platform, and the product menu splits into Screen, Interview, Engage, SkillUp and a newer AI interviewer called Chakra.
What stands out is how thoroughly the AI question has been absorbed. Screen is headlined around technical screening built for the AI era, and the pricing page opens with plans for hiring in the agentic era. Rather than picking one side, HackerRank lets teams set per test whether AI is allowed, running assessments that either test fundamentals without AI or measure the ability to work with it, and flagging AI use as suspicious activity when a test forbids it.
Inside HackerRank Screen
Screen is the take-home assessment product, and it evaluates three things at once. The vendor describes them as fundamentals without AI, covering code review and debugging on their own; the ability to work with AI across a normal development lifecycle; and knowledge of AI concepts such as prompt engineering, RAG and vector databases. HackerRank reports a library spanning 77 roles and more than 260 skills, with Certified Assessments providing pre-built role-based tests, and the pricing page lists real-world questions and multi-file, project-based questions as separate included capabilities.
Every plan includes the Agentic IDE, where candidates work alongside AI agents, and admins set guarded or unguarded guardrail controls per assessment. Candidates can pick among Claude, Gemini and GPT models when policy allows, across more than 55 supported languages.
Live interviews and the Chakra AI Interviewer
HackerRank Interview handles the live stage. Sessions run inside real code repositories with a shared IDE, terminal and file navigation, so interviewers watch candidates work in something closer to a working environment than a blank editor. Recording and playback are standard, and Scorecard Assist auto-fills rubrics from the transcript, submitted code and test-case results.
Chakra, flagged as new throughout the site, is the AI-led conversational screening layer: it asks real-time follow-ups and returns a report with transcript, session replay and scores. HackerRank suits engineering and talent teams hiring developers on a steady cadence who want a deliberate position on AI use during assessment. Teams already on Greenhouse, Lever or Ashby get the most value from the Pro plan, while Workday shops and organizations needing SSO, SCIM, audit logs and API or MCP access land in Enterprise territory.
It fits poorly for companies making one or two technical hires a year, since the plans are attempt-metered subscriptions rather than pay-per-test, and for anyone hiring outside engineering, since the library is entirely developer-focused. Developers wanting a structured curriculum rather than interview rehearsal will find the practice side thinner than a dedicated learning platform.
