What is Exponent?
Exponent is an interview-preparation platform for people chasing technical and product roles at tech companies. Rather than selling a single course, it bundles a role-based course library, a searchable database of real interview questions, and a scheduler that pairs you with other candidates for mock interviews into one membership, with one-on-one coaching sold alongside it.
The organizing idea is that content maps to a hiring loop rather than to a topic: you pick a track and work through it. Tracks include Product Management, Software Engineering, System Design, Engineering Management, Data Science, Machine Learning, Data Engineering, Generative AI, Security Engineer, TPM, Solutions Architect, and UX / Product Design, plus a newer Forward Deployed Engineering course marked as beta.
Course tracks mapped to real hiring loops
Exponent's courses combine video with written material — the vendor describes them as "detailed lessons, guides, videos, and frameworks" — with each track scoped to a specific interview loop. System Design is framed around defining architectures, interfaces, and databases under time pressure; Data Engineering targets data models and ETL pipelines. The Forward Deployed track is unusually specific, aimed at FDE loops at firms such as Anthropic, OpenAI, and Palantir. A banner during our review advertised a rebuilt Product Management course with 45 new lessons reworked for AI-era interviews.
Peer mock interviews are the real draw
Practice is where Exponent earns its keep. The scheduler matches you with candidates preparing for the same kind of interview, and both people take turns as interviewer and interviewee, roughly thirty minutes each across a session of about an hour. Technical rounds get a shared code editor built in. Categories span Product Management, Data Structures & Algorithms, System Design, Behavioral, SQL, Data Science & ML, and Frontend.
Matches run daily at pre-scheduled times, and only your public display name reaches a partner. This is the one component a solo studier cannot replicate at home, which is why the membership pays off for people who book weekly rather than binge-watching lessons.
AI feedback fills the gaps between partners
When no peer slot fits your schedule, Exponent lets you answer real questions and get instant AI feedback instead. The practice FAQ says you get an automatic transcript and the AI grades the interview against "realistic hiring rubrics that have been developed with best practices in mind," returning a score for each attribute plus recommendations on how to improve it. The practice page also promotes an "AI Interviewer," and AI feedback arrives alongside your partner's notes after a peer mock; the Expert plan lists "AI mock interviews," "AI interview feedback," and "Chat with AI coach." These features sit in the top plan rather than the base one.
Question bank and crowd-sourced interview reports
The question database filters by role, company, and category, with collections for employers including Meta, Google, Amazon, Microsoft, DoorDash, and Anthropic. Selected questions are flagged as having a video answer — the homepage advertises "over 100+ live video answers" from experts against a database of 5,204 questions — so you can sometimes watch how a strong response is delivered rather than only read it. Rounding it out are Experiences, firsthand reports from candidates fresh out of a loop, and a job referrals feature connecting members to referrers at target companies.
Coaching, resume review, and negotiation help
Beyond the membership, Exponent sells work with coaches it describes as hand-picked and vetted, drawn from product, engineering, and recruiting backgrounds. Sessions run 60 minutes, are tailored to the weak spots you name, never expire, and stay redeemable for any coaching type. Resume Review is pitched on the homepage as getting "your resume reviewed by a senior tech recruiter," and the negotiation coaching package — explicitly not the 1-hour sessions — is "guaranteed to increase your offer. If it does not, we will give you your money back!"
One structural detail catches people out: buying coaching does not include a membership, and a membership does not include coaching sessions. They are separate purchases: the coaching FAQ states plainly that "the purchase of a coaching session does not include Exponent's membership."
Who should choose Exponent
Exponent fits candidates already in or approaching a loop for a named tech role, especially those who will commit to regular peer mocks. Basic is genuinely free and needs no card, so sampling costs nothing; Pro unlocks the full catalog, unlimited peer mocks, the complete question database, priority referrals, and the Slack community; Expert layers the AI coaching suite on top.
It is a weaker fit for two groups. If you are targeting a non-technical function outside these role families, the catalog will not cover you. And if your only gap is algorithmic volume, a dedicated practice grinder beats a breadth-first subscription you would underuse.
