Avira is a German brand operated from Tettnang by Avira Operations GmbH and is part of Gen Digital, the NASDAQ-listed group that also owns Norton, Avast, AVG, LifeLock, ReputationDefender and CCleaner. The range starts with Avira Free Security and moves up through Antivirus Pro, Internet Security and Prime, which bundles all Avira products across Windows, Mac, Android, iOS and browsers.
The core is cloud-based real-time antivirus using the Avira Protection Cloud. Internet Security and Prime add Password Manager Pro with breach alerts and weak or reused password checks, plus Software Updater Pro on Windows or a cookie cleaner on Mac. Prime adds a VPN with unlimited data and a kill switch on Windows. Firewall and Web Protection are Windows-only; Mac users rely on the Browser Safety extension. Third-party results are mixed: Gen reported AV-Comparatives Gold for Real World Protection for Avira in April 2025, while All About Cookies cites a 70 percent AV-TEST performance impact on Windows in June 2026 against a 14 percent industry average, a 3.5/6 macOS score in March 2026 and 14th place in AV-Comparatives’ September 2025 performance test. Antivirus Pro is US$18.99 for the first year on one device, Internet Security US$24.99, and Prime US$41.99 for five devices. Monthly plans are USD 3.99, 4.99 and 6.99 respectively; two-year terms are USD 77.99, 87.99 and 142.99.
Renewals are the catch. Antivirus Pro renews at USD 44.99 a year, Internet Security at USD 49.99 and Prime at USD 76.99, and all are marked as subject to change. All About Cookies notes that adding devices to a plan can double the price. Annual plans carry a 60-day money-back guarantee; monthly plans get 14 days and renewal payments only a pro-rated refund of the remaining months. On the parent company, the FTC ordered Gen’s Avast brand in February 2024 to pay $16.5 million and stop selling browsing data; that order names Avast, not Avira.
