What it is

Windscribe is owned by Windscribe Limited, a company registered in Ontario, Canada. It sells a Pro plan with unlimited data across over 69 countries and 112 cities, R.O.B.E.R.T. blocking of ads, trackers and malware, and a config generator for OpenVPN, IKEv2 and WireGuard. One account covers unlimited devices for personal use.

Its server stack, FreshScribe, was audited by Packetlabs in June 2024, and Leviathan Security Group reviewed the desktop app in September 2021 and the Android and iOS apps in March 2022. The FreshScribe RAM-only rebuild followed a July 2021 server seizure in Ukraine, in which, in Windscribe’s own words, an OpenVPN CA key was exposed because servers were not encrypted at rest.

What it costs in practice

Pro is $9 a month billed monthly or $69 billed every 12 months, which the upgrade page presents as $5.75 a month and marks as most popular. Both renew automatically at the same rate and can be cancelled at any time. Build A Plan lets you pick up to 7 locations at $1 each per month with a $3 minimum; each location adds 10GB of bandwidth, and unlimited data and R.O.B.E.R.T. are $1 add-ons apiece.

The free plan gives 10GB a month once you confirm your email (2GB otherwise) across 10 countries, with no expiry. Static IPs are a yearly add-on only, $96 for residential and $24 for datacenter, and require Pro or a Build A Plan with unlimited bandwidth. ScribeForce team accounts are $5 per month per seat with a 5-seat minimum. Refunds must be requested within 7 business days of the start date and before usage passes 10GB.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Windscribe cost?

Windscribe Pro is $9 a month billed monthly or $69 a year ($5.75 a month), both renewing at the same rate. Build A Plan starts at $1 per location per month with a $3 minimum and up to 7 locations, with unlimited data and R.O.B.E.R.T. as $1 add-ons each. The free plan costs nothing.

How many devices does Windscribe cover?

One account, free or Pro, covers unlimited devices for personal use. Windscribe polices this with abuse detection, and extreme multi-device or commercial use will almost always get an account banned.

Verdict

Windscribe’s free tier is the most generous here at 10GB a month with no device limit, and Pro is priced honestly with the same rate at renewal. The catch is a narrow refund window (7 business days, under 10GB) and a 2021 server seizure that exposed a CA key before the RAM-only rebuild. Try the free plan first; it costs nothing and the Pro upgrade holds its price.
