What is Microsoft Copilot?
Microsoft Copilot is the assistant Microsoft puts in front of everyday users — the vendor's own FAQ calls it a digital companion for daily life, designed to inform, entertain and inspire — and a brand now stretched across the company's product line. The vendor's Copilot hub lists it beside Microsoft 365 Copilot, Microsoft Copilot Studio, Microsoft Security Copilot, GitHub Copilot and Copilot in Power Apps, keeping the personal-use edition separate from the work-grounded ones.
In practice Copilot behaves like a research and drafting companion. Microsoft describes its Copilot app as a place to chat with an AI assistant, run agents that conduct research and generate documents, find files through a streamlined search experience, organize material in Copilot Pages and Notebooks, and talk by voice.
Everyday answers and web research
The free experience is the usual entry point: Microsoft says that for personal use you can try Microsoft Copilot on the web for free or download the app, and that you can start using it right away at copilot.microsoft.com. Microsoft frames the app's chat as a way to get insights, brainstorm ideas and draft content, with agents that conduct research and generate documents, which makes it a reasonable first stop for background reading or a rough draft you then edit yourself.
Voice matters more than the feature list suggests. Microsoft pitches spoken interaction as a way to prepare for your day and brainstorm on the go, which pairs well with the mobile app. Copilot Pages then gives those loose threads a durable home rather than burying them in chat history.
Copilot inside Word, Excel and PowerPoint
Subscribers get Copilot embedded in the Office apps rather than a separate tab. The individual plans page walks through four jobs: reaching a first draft fast in Word, turning numbers into knowledge in Excel, going from prompt to presentation in PowerPoint, and reducing a crowded inbox to a summary in Outlook.
Two named agents sit above that layer. The vendor describes Researcher as a way to find, synthesize and understand information faster, while Analyst moves from raw figures to real insight. How the Microsoft Copilot lineup is arranged
This is the part that trips buyers up. On the consumer side there is a free tier, then Microsoft 365 Personal, Family and Premium, with Premium marketed as the pick for AI and productivity. On the work side Microsoft sells bundles named Microsoft 365 Business Standard with Copilot and Microsoft 365 Business Premium with Copilot, a Microsoft 365 Copilot Business add-on for smaller teams, and the flagship Microsoft 365 Copilot add-on, which needs a qualifying subscription underneath it.

Copilot is the obvious pick if you already live inside Microsoft's world.
