Hotspot Shield is a consumer VPN operated by Intersections, LLC trading as Pango Group in Boston, with a Swiss affiliate, Pango GmbH; the site footers still carry the older Anchorfree name. It comes in two tiers. Basic is free and limited to one device and one virtual location with support-centre-only help. Premium adds 10 device connections, 125+ virtual locations, speeds up to 1 Gbps and Smart TV apps on top of Windows, Mac, iOS and Android.
The service runs on its own proprietary Hydra protocol, built on the OpenSSL library, alongside IPSec and OpenVPN. The feature list covers a kill switch, IP and DNS leak protection, anti-phishing, Tor over VPN, traffic obfuscation, split tunnelling and dedicated streaming and gaming modes. The vendor’s security-audit page mentions an independent audit but gives no auditor or date, and in 2017 the Center for Democracy & Technology filed an FTC complaint alleging the app injected advertising scripts and collected identifiers it claimed to exempt.
